  1. Celtic tribes invaded the islands about the 4th Century BC from
  2. where their Gaelic culture and literature spread to Scotland.  In
  3. the 5th Century AD, St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland. 
  4. In the 8th Century, Ireland was invaded by Norsemen and in 1014,
  5. King Brian Boru defeated the Danes.  In the 12th Century, the
  6. English invaded and their struggle continued for over 700 years. 
  7. In 1916, The Easter Monday Rebellion failed but was followed by a
  8. protracted guerrilla war with British troops.  The Irish
  9. Parliament or the Dail Eireann, declared independence in January
  10. 1919.  The British offered dominion status to the 6 counties of
  11. Ulster and to the 26 counties of southern Ireland.  The Irish
  12. Free State was declared on December 11, 1922 and the 6 counties
  13. of Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom.  On
  14. December 29, 1937 a free democratic state of Eire was declared
  15. and on December 21, 1948 a republic was declared with no
  16. association to the Commonwealth.  Ireland continued to favor a
  17. peaceful integration of Northern Ireland and continued to support
  18. anti-terrorist actions by the British.  Ireland has suffered
  19. harsh economic problems.  In 1987 unemployment reached 18%.
